Introduction
Welcome back to the Eyes on Jesus podcast with Drew and Tim, where the goal is to make disciples and grow in discernment, all while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. Today’s episode is all about evangelism, a subject that stirs up a myriad of thoughts and emotions in most Christians.
What is Evangelism?
Evangelism generally translates to ‘preaching the good news’ and is one of the fundamental calls in the life of every believer, as depicted in the Great Commission. It involves sharing the message of salvation through Jesus Christ to others and urging them to respond in faith. However, many Christians might shy away from this topic, thinking it’s reserved for extroverted church leaders or clergy. That is not the case. Regardless of personality and spiritual gifting, we are all called to evangelize in unique and diverse ways.
First Steps In Evangelism
Evangelism might feel awkward and daunting, especially if you’re an introvert or you’re not used to speaking about your faith. The solution there isn’t to shy away but to stretch ourselves, embrace the discomfort, and trust God for the results.
When venturing into evangelism for the first time, one idea is to co-evangelize or share the gospel jointly with a friend. This way, you can support and learn from each other. It can be as simple as engaging someone in a conversation about their beliefs at the gas station, starting a religious discussion on a plane ride, or casually inviting your neighbor over for a religious chat.
Different Forms of Evangelism
Evangelism takes various forms, and employing a multi-faceted approach might be most effective. These can include:
* One-on-One Evangelism: This form is probably the most common, involving proclamation of the gospel in small, intimate settings. From sharing your testimony with a friend to leading a bible study session, one-on-one evangelism is often a starting point for many.
* Door-to-Door Evangelism: Though this method isn’t as popular today, it involves going from house to house, sharing the gospel.
* Mass Evangelism: As the name suggests, mass evangelism aims to reach a large number of people in a short period.
* Prison Evangelism: This evangelism form reaches those serving time in prison, offering hope for a better and more fulfilling life once they’ve finished serving their sentence.
* Hospitality Evangelism: Hospitality evangelism leverages the power of community to share the gospel in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
* Service Evangelism: This approach involves using acts of service to show Christ’s love and preach the gospel.
* Media Evangelism: This innovative approach applies various media forms like TV, radio, and the internet for evangelism, helping to reach people in remote areas.
* Friendship Evangelism: It capitalizes on the power of relationships and friendships to share faith in an organic and authentic way.
In Conclusion
Evangelism, in all its diverse forms, is a vital part of our Christian walk. As we share the good news of Jesus Christ, we must do so with grace, gentleness, and respect, remembering that the goal is not to win an argument but to win souls over for Christ. So gear up, pray up, and let’s get talking about Jesus!
